ABOUT THE CLIENT
Alto Neuroscience is transforming psychiatry through personalized treatments that target individual neurobiology for faster, more effective mental health care. Their Platform leverages EEG, wearable data, genetics, and AI-driven insights to match patients with the most suitable treatments.
OVERVIEW
Users struggled with EEG setup, complex software, and unclear manuals, causing confusion and inefficiencies. Poor navigation and inaccessible patient information further hindered usability and engagement.
We conducted user research, usability testing, and secondary analysis to identify challenges in EEG setup and information accessibility for clinicians and patients. Our solution streamlined workflows, enhanced navigation, and simplified content to create a seamless and user-friendly experience.

OUR PROCESS
Defining Goals
Users encountered significant challenges in operating EEG hardware and related software, leading to confusion, inefficiencies, and frustration in both setup and usage. The complexity of running multiple applications, poorly structured user manuals, and difficult navigation of tech check systems created barriers for clinicians and patients alike. Additionally, the information presented to patients lacked clarity, accessibility, and inclusivity, making it harder to engage with and understand.
1. Simplify Software & Hardware Integration
Streamline the EEG setup process to ensure seamless operation of multiple software applications, reducing connectivity issues and user frustration
2. Enhance Information Accessibility
Restructure user manuals with a clear, intuitive layout, enabling clinicians to quickly locate relevant information without unnecessary delays.
3. Improve Data Navigation & Filtering
Optimize the tech check system by adding intelligent filtering and search capabilities, ensuring clinicians can efficiently analyze test information, even with limited access
4. Design Inclusive & Engaging Patient Resources
Redesign patient-facing information with clear visuals, minimal text, and accessibility features (e.g., color blindness and dyslexia-friendly formats) to enhance comprehension and engagement.
Problem statement
Users struggled with complex EEG setup, inaccessible information, and inefficient navigation, leading to frustration and workflow inefficiencies.

Our Approach to designing
To improve the EEG setup process and enhance the accessibility of information for clinicians and patients, we conducted user research, usability testing, and secondary analysis to identify key pain points. Our solution focused on simplifying workflows, improving navigation, and making information more digestible for a seamless user experience.
1. Streamlining EEG Setup & Reducing Connectivity Issues
Clinicians faced confusion when running multiple software applications alongside EEG hardware. To simplify the process:
- User interviews were conducted to identify specific setup challenges.
- A step-by-step checklist was introduced, outlining necessary hardware and software configurations.
- The checklist provided a clear, structured guide, significantly reducing troubleshooting time and ensuring smooth connectivity.
2. Improving manual Navigation and Accessibility
The existing user manuals were overwhelming and lacked a clear structure, making it difficult for clinicians to find critical information. To address this:
- A thorough audit of the manuals was conducted to identify contextual gaps.
- Manuals were restructured into three distinct sections: Pre-use, During Use, and Post-use, helping clinicians quickly locate relevant information at different testing stages.
- The new format enabled faster troubleshooting and reduced cognitive load, making the manuals more efficient and user-friendly.
3. Enhancing tech Check Navigation and Data Filtering
Clinicians struggled with analyzing test data due to poor navigation and lack of filtering options in the tech check system. To improve efficiency:
- The user journey was mapped, identifying key touch points where clinicians faced difficulties.
- A tagging system was introduced, allowing users to filter information by parameters such as pass/fail ratios and test types.
- An interactive overlay was implemented, displaying critical information dynamically on click, reducing the need to switch between multiple pages.
- These enhancements streamlined data access, enabling faster retrieval and improved workflow efficiency.
4. Creating an inclusive and Engaging Patient Experience
Patients, especially those with conditions like color blindness and dyslexia, found the information overwhelming and difficult to understand. To enhance accessibility:
- Secondary research was conducted to understand patient challenges and cognitive barriers.
- Instructions were simplified to one per screen, ensuring clarity and ease of understanding.
- Visual cues, icons, and diagrams were introduced to communicate success and failure states instantly, allowing for quick interpretation of results.
- Color-coded elements were added to differentiate between critical actions, improving engagement and comprehension for all users.

Design Approach & Style Guide
- For Alto, we prioritized efficiency by developing a concise style guide rather than a full-scale design system. This approach ensured visual consistency while streamlining the development process.
- The style guide included:
- A detailed color palette.
- Typography documentation
- Graphic assets, including images and illustrations
- An icon library
- To facilitate implementation, we provided the development team with a full walkthrough of the designs.
