About the Company

Lexi was founded by Linh Pham and Siddharth UR after discovering a major gap in hospitals. The reliance on costly, slow, and error-prone human phone interpreters often led to miscommunication and even life-threatening mistakes for patients with limited English proficiency. Determined to solve this, they built a HIPAA-compliant, AI-powered language interpretation web platform which also integrates directly with hospital telephony systems delivering fast, accurate, and scalable medical interpretation at a fraction of the cost of traditional models.

The Challenge

As Lexi began turning its vision into a real enterprise product, several complexities surfaced:

  • Integrating with Hospital Workflows: Lexi’s first customer relied heavily on manual translation over the phone and needed a solution that fit effortlessly into existing operations. They also wanted to monitor and track usage, and report performance.
  • Optimizing AI Agent Performance: The AI powered translator also needed to be free from hallucinations, eliminate interruptions, improve the speed of response in order to be used in daily as well as critical clinical environments.Ensuring Enterprise-Level Scalability and Uptime: Targeting large hospital systems meant Lexi required an infrastructure capable of delivering 99.99% uptime and seamless scalability. This meant a strategic migration from the POC setup to a more robust AWS architecture.
  • Achieving Full HIPAA Compliance: The platform needed to securely store protected health information and withstand rigorous compliance audits in order to meet the standards of major healthcare organizations. This made security and regulatory alignment a foundational priority.

These challenges required not just engineering execution but deep product, compliance, and infrastructure expertise to bring Lexi to market successfully.

Solution Implemented by Tequity

Tequity began working with Lexi shortly after they secured a Letter of Intent and had initiated a pilot with their first major healthcare customer. Tequity became Lexi’s extended product and engineering team, responsible for turning an early prototype into a secure, scalable, and enterprise-ready platform.

  • Defined and Implemented a Secure AWS Tech Stack:
A complete migration from Google Cloud to AWS was done, establishing a HIPAA-compliant, high-availability infrastructure designed to support the uptime, security, and scalability requirements of large healthcare organizations.
  • Built a Custom Dashboard and Backend System:
Within a rapid development cycle of two weeks,  Lexi Center, a robust dashboard and backend system that enabled the monitoring of interpreter usage, tracking performance metrics, and seamlessly managing call workflows was implemented..
  • Integrated the AI Interpreter Directly into Hospital Telephony:
A hands-free version of Lexi’s AI interpreter using real-time WebRTC connections via LiveKit was implemented. This integration allowed the AI to function natively within the hospital’s existing telephony systems, effectively replacing human interpreters without disrupting established workflows.
  • Enhanced the AI Agent’s Core Performance:
To ensure clinical-grade reliability, multiple improvements to the core agent were implemented, including:
  • Advanced noise cancellation and VAD
  • Improved tracking of LiveKit rooms and participants
  • Structured data capture for ongoing analysis and iterative optimization
  • Ensured Enterprise-Grade Security and Compliance:
An E2E VAPT(penetration testing) was conducted, Vanta was implemented  for continuous HIPAA monitoring, and improved system observability with automated Slack alerts for real-time issue detection and rapid response.

Results

The partnership between Lexi and Tequity delivered outcomes that materially accelerated Lexi’s growth trajectory:

  • Lexi successfully onboarded its first enterprise client after the pilot, thereby demonstrating clear operational and clinical impact.
  • The client reduced interpretation expenses by an estimated 70–80%, translating into potential annual savings approaching close to a million dollars. This was a transformative financial outcome for the institution.
  • The health center expanded Lexi’s deployment across multiple departments, further increasing usage, value delivered, and recurring revenue.

Building on this success, Lexi is on the road to initiate new pilots with few other major healthcare institutions, signaling strong traction and reinforcing its position as an emerging leader in AI-powered medical interpretation.
